Airway Bill
The transport document issued by an airline for air freight, serving as the contract of carriage and a receipt for the cargo.
Bill of Lading
The transport document issued by a shipping line for sea freight, serving as the contract of carriage, a receipt for the cargo, and often a document of title.
CIF
Cost, Insurance, and Freight. An Incoterm where the seller pays for shipping and insurance to the named destination port; the customs value used for duty is generally based on this figure.
CoC
Certificate of Conformity, issued under the PVoC programme confirming that a shipment of regulated goods meets Kenyan or East African standards.
CRSP
Current Retail Selling Price, the schedule KRA uses to value used motor vehicles for duty purposes, adjusted for depreciation based on the vehicle age.
Customs Bond
A financial guarantee, usually arranged by a clearing agent, that duties will be paid or that goods will be handled according to customs rules, commonly used for transit and bonded cargo.
Demurrage
Charges levied by a shipping line or port when a container is not collected or returned within the free time allowed, usually because clearance is taking longer than expected.
FCL
Full Container Load: a shipment that fills an entire sea container on its own, as opposed to sharing space with other shippers.
FOB
Free On Board. An Incoterm where the seller's responsibility ends once the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the port of origin; freight and insurance from that point are the buyer's responsibility.
HS Code
Harmonised System code, the internationally standardised numerical classification for traded goods that determines the applicable import duty band.
iCMS
KRA's Integrated Customs Management System, used to lodge and process customs declarations electronically.
IDF
Import Declaration Fee, a statutory charge of a rate pending verification of customs value paid on most imports into Kenya, funding pre-arrival processing of the Import Declaration Form.
Incoterms
International Commercial Terms, a standard set of trade terms (such as FOB, CIF, and DDP) defining who is responsible for shipping, insurance, and risk at each stage of a shipment.
KEBS
Kenya Bureau of Standards, the government body responsible for setting and verifying product standards, including pre-shipment vehicle inspections.
KenTrade Single Window
The Kenya Trade Network Agency's electronic platform where importers and agents lodge Import Declaration Forms and other trade documents in one place.
LCL
Less than Container Load: a shipment that shares container space with cargo from other shippers, consolidated at origin and deconsolidated at destination.
PVoC
Pre-Export Verification of Conformity, the programme requiring certain regulated goods to be inspected and certified before they are shipped to Kenya.
RDL
Railway Development Levy, a statutory charge of a rate pending verification of customs value on imported goods, used to fund railway infrastructure including the Standard Gauge Railway.
RoRo
Roll-on Roll-off, a method of shipping vehicles that are driven directly onto and off the vessel, commonly used for used motor vehicle imports.
Transit Entry
A customs declaration for cargo moving through Kenya to a neighbouring country such as Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, or the DRC, without duties being paid in Kenya.
Verification
A physical or scanner inspection carried out by KRA to confirm that declared goods match what was entered, which can add time to the clearance process.
